Tata Power Solar Power Systems has been awarded a contract by NLC India to build a 300 megawatt solar power project. The project would be built in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district in northwest India.
The contract for engineering, procurement, and commissioning, or EPC, was granted for ₹ 1,755 crore ($213 million). Tata Power is needed to commission the plant within 18 months and to offer operation and maintenance services for three years after commissioning.
The project is planned to generate 750 million kilowatt-hours of power per year and offset 0.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions once fully operational.
NLC India was awarded the project via the Central Public Sector Undertaking system (CPSU). Only government entities are allowed to participate in these scheme.
The CPSU system requires tender winners to either use all of the electricity generated or sell it to other government-owned firms. Private enterprises cannot sell or utilise the power generated by these installations.
Projects funded under this plan are also required to employ Indian-made cells and modules. The initiative was introduced by the federal government as a means of encouraging local solar module production.
