The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is the fourth largest international airport in the country in terms of handling international passengers. CIAL has taken the lead in utilizing renewable energy in the aviation sector by becoming the first fully solar-powered airport in the country.
The airport had last year opened a state-of-the-art new international terminal for passengers so now it requires more solar power to make new extensions and other infrastructure facilities functional.
Once the installed capacity of the solar power system is upgraded to 40 MW, it will be able to generate around 1.6 lakh units of power per day, against its daily requirement of 1.2-1.3 lakh units, said CIAL authorities.
This time they did an innovation and experimented with Floating Solar.
This floating solar project has generated 28628.33 MWh of clean energy till July 2021, further contributing to CIALs efforts to sustain power-positive status of the airport.
India subsidiary of GoodWe, Ciel Et Terre Solar Pvt Ltd. (CTSP) has installed its first 450 kW floating solar project at Cochin Airport’s CIAL golf course. This is the first installed Hydrelio floating photovoltaic project in the country.
Cochin Airport Authority Limited (CIAL) implemented the project, with Sterling Wilson as the engineering procurement construction (EPC) service provider.
According to a company statement, installing the initial 100 kW demonstration project in May, to a delegation visiting the airport for International Solar Alliance, took less than two weeks.
