Compass Minerals Convert Sustainable Lithium Brine To Battery-Grade Lithium Hydroxide

Compass Minerals

Compass Minerals has reported the successful conversion of its sustainable lithium brine deposit to lithium carbonate and battery-grade lithium hydroxide.

Third-party Veolia Energy conducted the tests, which utilized a commercially feasible conversion technique. According to Compass Minerals, the conversion sample fulfills established battery-grade standards for the domestic electric vehicle and energy storage markets in the United States at a concentration of >56.5 percent lithium hydroxide monohydrate.

The company says this will enable the United States to develop sophisticated battery materials domestically and serve the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle fleet.

Compass Minerals appears to have discovered a method for extracting lithium from brine that is less water-intensive and environmentally friendly, and converting it into high-grade battery components, which is an incredible feat.
