India is making a significant push towards a greener future with its ambitious “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” . This initiative aims to empower 10 million households with rooftop solar panels, to let them generate 300 units of their own electricity. To achieve this large-scale deployment, the government is placing a strong emphasis on skill and vendor development.
A crucial aspect of the plan is building a robust workforce. The Ministry of Renewable Energy and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship are collaborating to create a “skilling plan”. This initiative aims to train a 100,000-strong workforce skilled in solar panel installation and maintenance. The program is designed to be scalable, with the potential to train even more individuals if required.
Beyond the workforce, a robust network of vendors is equally important. The government recognizes this need and is planning to train an additional 50,000 individuals for entrepreneurship.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana boasts a substantial outlay of Rs 75,021 crore ($9.3 billion). The program leverages a combination of power distribution companies, trained vendors, rationalized subsidies, and collateral-free loans to make rooftop solar a viable option for millions of Indian households.
The scheme’s success is evident in the overwhelming response – registrations crossed the 10 million mark within a month of launch, with nearly 800,000 consumers already applying for installations.
