BYD Overtakes Tesla As World’s Top EV Seller!

BYD vs Tesla EV sales

In a landmark shift for the global electric vehicle (EV) market, China’s BYD has overtaken Tesla to become the world’s leading EV seller for the calendar year 2025. According to recent industry data, BYD delivered around 2.26 million fully electric vehicles in 2025, representing approximately a 28 % increase in annual EV sales, while Tesla’s deliveries declined to about 1.64 million vehicles, an 8.6 % year-on-year drop. This marks the first time that Tesla — long synonymous with EV leadership — has been unseated on a full-year basis by another manufacturer.

The growing dominance of BYD reflects strong demand both within China and in international markets. Analysts attribute the company’s surge to its wide range of EV models, competitive pricing, and robust production and supply chain capabilities that have helped it scale rapidly. While Tesla once held a clear lead in EV sales, recent market pressures — including the expiration of attractive EV tax credits in the United States and intensifying global competition — have dampened its annual delivery figures.

BYD’s ascendancy also underscores broader trends reshaping the EV landscape. Chinese automakers, leveraging domestic market scale and advanced battery technologies, are expanding globally and challenging established Western brands. Despite falling behind in sheer unit sales, Tesla continues to be a powerful force in EV innovation and remains highly valued in financial markets. But for 2025, BYD’s superior global sales performance places it at the forefront of the electrified transportation revolution.
