India has marked a major milestone in its clean energy journey by adding a record 44.5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in 2025, the highest annual addition in the country’s history. This significant expansion, driven largely by solar and wind power projects, underscores India’s accelerating shift toward a low-carbon and sustainable energy future.

With this addition, India’s total installed renewable energy capacity has crossed 204 GW, and rises to approximately 254 GW when large hydroelectric power is included. The achievement reflects strong policy support, growing private sector participation, and rapid deployment of clean energy infrastructure across states. It also places India among the world’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.

The surge in renewable installations aligns with India’s long-term climate commitments, including its pledge to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
Solar power continues to be the backbone of India’s renewable growth, supported by large-scale solar parks, rooftop installations, and falling technology costs. Wind energy has also regained momentum, particularly in coastal and high-potential states, contributing to grid stability and energy diversification.
Experts view this record-breaking capacity addition as a turning point for India’s energy transition. Beyond environmental benefits, the renewable sector is generating employment, attracting global investment, and supporting innovation in energy storage and grid modernization.
As India continues to scale up clean energy, sustained policy clarity, faster grid integration, and investment in storage technologies will be critical to maintaining this momentum.
