2017 saw a ‘notable decline’ in Wind turbine orders

The number of global orders for wind turbines has experienced a substantial decline since 2016.

Data collected by Navigant Research has found the number of worldwide orders placed for wind turbines in 1H 2017 was 11,570.9MW compared to 2H 2016 which hit 14,743.9MW.

While Navigant Research pointing to a number of large mergers in which Nordex acquired Acciona and Siemens and Gamesa merged to become Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) they believe that a change in the Indian wind market is partly responsible.

India’s decision to change from a feed-in tariff to a competitive bidding process has seen order numbers decline dramatically.

Yet there has also been a notable decline in orders in each region involved in the study.

‘Asia Pacific led all regions in wind turbine order capacity with 2,775.2 MW signed in 1H 2017. Europe was 2nd and North America came in 3rd. Latin America recorded 741.8 MW of orders for 4th place and the Middle East & Africa came in a distant 5th with 198.8 MW.

All five regions saw a significant drop in order capacity from 2H 2016, with Asia Pacific recording the largest decrease of over 1,500.0 MW.’
