Adani signs PPA in Australia

Indian energy giant Adani says it has found a retailer to sell energy generated by its new central Queensland solar plant.

An undisclosed power retailer has agreed to take 80 per cent of energy output from the Rugby Run facility, Adani chairman Gautam Adani announced in a statement on Tuesday.

“We are the largest generator of solar energy in India and we aim to replicate that in Australia,” he said.

The firm intends to generate 1500-megawatts via a number of renewable energy projects across Australia within the next five years.

Construction on the 65-megawatt first stage of the Rugby Run facility is scheduled to begin this month, as initial works also get underway on its controversial $16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine in the state’s Galilee Basin.

The mine has faced extensive opposition from environmental groups who have protested across Australia over concerns of it’s impact on the Great Barrier Reef and climate change.

Adani is yet to secure significant funding for the project, including a rail line that would transport the coal to the coast for export to India.
