Aluminium-Air Batteries

Aluminium-Air Batteries For EVs Are Being Developed In India

Hindalco Industries Limited, Aditya Birla Group’s metals flagship, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Phinergy, a leading Israel-based pioneer in metal-air battery technology, and IOC Phinergy Private Limited (IOP) for R&D and pilot production of aluminum plates for Aluminium-Air batteries, as well as recycling of aluminum after usage in these batteries.

Aluminium-Air Batteries

When aluminium combines with oxygen in ambient air to form aluminium hydroxide, energy is released in the Aluminium-Air batteries invented by Phinergy. These batteries considerably extends the driving range of Electric Vehicles due to its light weight and high energy density.

It also allows for rapid’refueling’ and avoids the need for costly countrywide charging networks. Aluminium-air batteries are projected to make EV adoption easier while also hastening the transition to zero-emission mobility.

Another advantage is that the battery’s aluminum hydroxide may be recycled to recover aluminum. The technique is now being tested by India’s main vehicle manufacturers.

Aluminium-Air batteries will help India’s renewable energy renaissance. This collaboration is a huge step forward in the deployment of Aluminium-Air batteries in India, and it will considerably improve the establishment of an ecosystem capable of supplying “aluminium, as manufactured in India, energy.”
