Apple Expands Clean Energy Initiatives In India
Email :

Apple expanded clean energy initiatives in India as it moves closer to achieving its 2030 carbon neutrality target.

The company said it will invest in new renewable energy capacity, water restoration projects, and supplier sustainability programs across India. The move comes as Apple increases manufacturing operations in the country and deepens partnerships with Indian suppliers.

Apple plans to support more than 150 megawatts of renewable energy generation in India through an initial investment of around ₹100 crore.

The company has already made sustainability a central part of its global supply chain strategy. Manufacturing accounts for nearly 74% of Apple’s carbon footprint, making supplier transition to clean power critical for emission reduction.

Apple said its global operations and supply chain now use over 18 gigawatts of clean electricity, more than triple the level recorded in 2020.

The India initiatives are expected to focus on solar energy expansion, water conservation, and recycling systems. Apple has also increased the use of recycled materials in its products. In 2025, recycled content accounted for 30% of materials shipped across Apple devices, the company said in its latest environmental report.

Apple aims to become fully carbon neutral across its supply chain and product lifecycle by 2030. The company says it has already reduced global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% compared with 2015 levels.

“Clean energy and water are foundational to healthy communities,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president for Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, said in an earlier sustainability update.

India has become a strategic manufacturing hub for Apple in recent years. The company’s environmental investments are likely to support both local production growth and India’s renewable energy ambitions.

Apple achieved key recycling goals, including using 100% recycled gold plating in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards.

The broader technology sector faces rising pressure to lower emissions linked to manufacturing, logistics, and data infrastructure. Apple has responded by increasing renewable energy procurement, reducing air freight use, and shifting toward fiber-based packaging. The company says shipping products by sea can reduce carbon emissions by up to 95% compared with air transport.

Industry analysts say Apple’s India-focused sustainability push could encourage other global electronics manufacturers to accelerate clean energy adoption in the region.
