India Sets New RE Record In 2025 With Solar And Wind Growth

India renewable capacity 2025

India achieved a major milestone in renewable energy in calendar year 2025. According to a JMK Research & Analytics report, the country added a record 37.9 GW of solar capacity and 6.3 GW of wind capacity. This marks the highest annual renewable deployment on record.

Solar power dominated the clean energy expansion. The additions included 28.6 GW of utility-scale solar, 7.9 GW of rooftop systems, and 1.35 GW of off-grid and distributed solar. The utility-scale segment grew by more than 54 % compared with 2024 figures.

Moreover, rooftop solar installations surged about 72 % year-on-year. This growth was supported by policy incentives and increasing investment in distributed energy solutions.

Meanwhile, wind energy also showed strong growth. India added around 6.3 GW of new wind capacity in 2025, nearly double the additions in 2024. Most of this surge came from open access and commercial projects.

By the end of December 2025, India’s total renewable energy installed capacity reached around 258 GW. Solar accounted for roughly 53 % of the mix, while wind contributed about 21 %. Large hydro, bioenergy and small hydro made up the rest.

State-level growth was also noteworthy. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu contributed about 83.7 % of all solar and wind installations in 2025. Gujarat led the list with more than 11 GW added.

India’s clean energy expansion underscores the pace of the country’s transition away from fossil fuels. However, continued investment in grid integration and storage solutions will be vital to support this rapid growth.
